The 5/3/1 AMRAP Set: How Many Reps Are Good?
In 5/3/1 there is a small plus after the last working set of every week: 5+, 3+ or 1+.
The plus means: you perform at least the prescribed number of reps and then as many further clean reps as you have that day.
That set is exactly what makes 5/3/1 interesting. While the first two working sets prescribe fairly precisely what you should do, the last one leaves some room for how you feel that day.
So you get more than a training stimulus — you get feedback: how well does my Training Max still match my current performance?
What does AMRAP actually mean?
AMRAP stands for “as many reps as possible”.
In strength training that normally means: one fixed weight, one set, and as many reps with that weight as you can manage.
The acronym is also used in CrossFit, though. There, AMRAP means “as many rounds as possible”: completing as many rounds of a workout as you can within a set time.
That is something entirely different.
In 5/3/1 it is about reps within a single set, not about as many rounds as possible in a time window.
Where does the AMRAP set sit in 5/3/1?
In classic 5/3/1, the three-week working phase looks like this:

The percentages refer to your Training Max (TM), not directly to your true 1RM. That is essential for understanding the program.
Say your Training Max on the bench press is 100 kg.
Then 95 % of that in week 3 is not 95 % of your true 1RM, but 95 % of an already conservative Training Max.
Which is why that set at 95 kg is not a classic max attempt.
How many reps should you get?
The most important rule is surprisingly simple:
You should get more than the prescribed number.
A 5+ with exactly five reps is technically successful, but it tells you considerably less than a set where you get, say, eight or ten clean reps.
That does not mean there is a magic rep count you have to hit every week.
As rough orientation, these ranges are often used:

| 3 | 95 % × 1+ | around 5–8 reps |
These are not official Wendler thresholds, and they are not targets you should force. Your actual rep count depends on the exercise, your training level, your technique and the day, among other things.
So the pattern across several cycles is more interesting.
If you regularly barely clear the minimum
Then it is worth looking at your Training Max.
If in week 3 you only manage one or two technically clean reps at 95 % TM across several cycles, your Training Max is probably set too high.
That does not automatically mean you have got weaker. Your starting TM may simply have been too optimistic.
If instead you get a great many reps
The opposite is possible too.
If you regularly get ten or more reps at 95 % TM, your Training Max is probably very conservative.
That is not necessarily bad. A conservative TM can absolutely be a deliberate part of your training strategy. But it does mean your weights may be sitting well below your current level.
A single AMRAP set is therefore no reason to change your Training Max immediately. A recurring pattern is far more interesting.
The AMRAP set is not a test to failure
This is one of the most common misreadings of the ”+”.
In 5/3/1, “as many reps as possible” does not mean: do reps until the bar will not move another centimetre.
The set is not supposed to become a maximal grind.
Wendler describes declining rep quality and bar speed as the signal to end the set. Current summaries of the 5/3/1 system likewise present the AMRAP set as a submaximal performance check rather than an all-out set to failure.
In practice that means:

Clean reps count. When technique clearly falls apart, the set is over.

You do not have to prove you can grind out one more ugly rep. An AMRAP set is meant to make progress visible, not to generate maximum fatigue every week.

The last rep does not have to look spectacular. When bar speed drops off sharply and you only get through with a grind, that is a good moment to stop.

Safety first. On squats and bench press in particular, an AMRAP set should be properly protected.
So the difference between a heavy but controlled set and a set where you barely survive the last rep is not simply a question of ambition.
It is a question of programming.
Why does the AMRAP set exist at all?
The real value of the set is that it produces information.
Picture two training sessions.
In both cases your Training Max is 100 kg and in week 3 you do:
95 kg × 5
In the first week the fifth rep would already be slow and technically marginal.
A few weeks later you manage:
95 kg × 8
The weight has not changed. Neither has your Training Max.
Your performance has.
Changes exactly like that are what make the AMRAP set interesting.
1. You can collect rep PRs
An AMRAP set can produce a rep PR: more reps with the same weight than before.
That is a different kind of personal record from a new 1RM.
You do not have to test whether you can move 120 kg once today. Instead you may have used 100 kg for the third time and got one more rep than last time.
That is progress — without a genuine max attempt.

2. You can track your estimated 1RM
Weight and reps can also be used to calculate an estimated 1RM.
One well-known approximation is the Epley formula:
e1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
At 95 kg that gives, for example:
- 95 kg × 5 → e1RM ≈ 111 kg
- 95 kg × 8 → e1RM ≈ 120 kg
These are estimates, of course. An e1RM is no substitute for a genuine 1RM test and becomes increasingly inaccurate at higher rep counts.
For tracking a trend the number is useful all the same: if under comparable conditions 95 kg × 5 eventually becomes 95 kg × 8, your capacity has clearly changed.
3. Your Training Max gets a sanity check
This is perhaps its most important function.
Your Training Max is a planning number. The program uses it to calculate the weights for the coming weeks.
But your actual capacity can change faster than that number does.
The AMRAP set therefore shows you whether the two still fit together.
If your rep counts climb noticeably across several cycles, your TM may be very conservative.
If you keep only just scraping the minimum reps, it may be set too high.
That does not make 5/3/1 fully “self-regulating” — but it does give you important feedback on how well the planned weights match your actual performance.
What if you are having a bad day?
Not every training day is the same.
Sleep, stress, nutrition, previous sessions and ordinary day-to-day variation all affect how a weight feels.
So you should not over-interpret a single bad AMRAP set.
If on a bad day you finish the prescribed sets and realise there is simply nothing more there, you do not have to try to squeeze out five extra reps.
The goal of 5/3/1 is not to turn every single training day into a test of your maximum capacity.
A bad training day is a bad training day — not proof that your whole Training Max is wrong.
It only gets interesting when the pattern repeats.
When do you skip the AMRAP set?
There are situations where the plus deliberately disappears.
Deload
In a deload phase, recovery is the priority. The purpose of the session is not to collect new performance data.
5s PRO
With 5s PRO the main sets are deliberately performed without the plus. So instead of 5+, the plan says 5 × 85 %, for instance.
That is not a mistake, and it is not a “lighter version” because someone forgot the AMRAP. Dropping the AMRAP set is part of the programming and creates room for the additional training volume and for that phase of the program.

When you are genuinely wiped out
An exceptionally bad day can be a reasonable cause too.
You do not have to force an AMRAP set on principle when even the normal working sets are noticeably heavier than expected.
What is not a particularly good reason:
“I don’t feel like it, because the set is unpleasant.”
The plus is not a decorative symbol, after all.
It is part of the system.
The AMRAP set makes progress visible
What is interesting about 5/3/1 is not that you do as many reps as possible every week.
It is the combination of a fixed weight, recurring loading and long-term comparison.
Your training might look like this, for instance:

You never once tested your true 1RM.
And yet you can see pretty clearly that your performance has improved.
That is where a single AMRAP set becomes a training trajectory.
The AMRAP set in hitPR
Data like this is interesting during training precisely when it does not just vanish somewhere in a logbook.

are not merely two old training notes.
You can read a traceable performance trend out of them.
This works exactly the same way with pen and paper, of course. What matters is not the app but that you record your training data over a long stretch at all.
An app can only take some of that work off your hands.
Conclusion
The AMRAP set is one of the most important elements of classic 5/3/1.
- The ”+” means going beyond the prescribed rep count.
- Working weights are calculated from your Training Max, not directly from your true 1RM.
- The frequently cited rep ranges are orientation, not fixed targets.
- An AMRAP set is not a call to train to failure. Clean reps and movement quality matter more than one last forced rep.
- Rep PRs and the trend across several cycles are the valuable part.
- Individual bad or unusually good training days should not be overrated.
- Recurring patterns, on the other hand, can indicate that your Training Max needs adjusting.
- In variations like 5s PRO, or during deloads, the AMRAP set can be dropped deliberately.
So the small plus after the rep count is more than an invitation to do a few extra reps.
It is a feedback signal between your training plan and your actual performance.
