What Does PR Mean in Lifting? Personal Records Explained

“Hit a PR today” sounds like a single heavy rep. In strength training, though, the term is broader.

A PR can be 120 kg for one rep. It can equally mean moving 100 kg six times instead of five for the first time.

That second form is often the more interesting one in normal training.

What does PR mean?

PR stands for personal record. “Hitting a PR” simply means you have beaten one of your own previous performances.

PB (personal best) means the same thing in everyday use. Which abbreviation you hear more often depends more on the sport, the community and the part of the world than on any difference in meaning.

The decisive part is the reference point: a PR does not compare you against a strength standards table or the person on the next bench. It compares today’s performance with your own previous ones.

Which is why an apparently unspectacular set can be real progress.

The four PR types

There is no official strength-sport taxonomy prescribing exactly four kinds of PR. For training and tracking, though, these four categories are practical:

The first two are genuine, directly observed best performances.

An e1RM PR, by contrast, is an estimate. And a volume PR depends on how you define volume. More tonnage is not automatically a better performance if the exercise, rep range or set count were completely different.

The categories help with classification. They are not equivalent, and not every one has to matter for your training.

Rep PRs are massively underrated

Anyone who does not test maximums regularly still gets stronger all the time. Rep PRs are what make that progress visible.

Say:

  • last week: 100 kg × 5
  • today: 100 kg × 6

That is a clear increase in performance at the same load.

An estimated 1RM (e1RM) can additionally be calculated from weight and reps. One well-known formula is Epley:

e1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)

Which gives roughly:

  • 100 kg × 5 → e1RM ≈ 117 kg
  • 100 kg × 6 → e1RM ≈ 120 kg

You do not have to do the arithmetic yourself: 1RM calculator.

The classification matters, though: an e1RM is not a measured maximum. Formulas like this rest on average relationships between load and possible reps. That relationship differs between people and exercises, and the spread becomes more relevant at higher rep counts.

Which makes an e1RM particularly useful as a trend value.

If the same formula on the same exercise climbs from 117 to 125 kg across months from comparable sets, that is a good signal. Whether you really would have managed exactly 125 kg for one rep that day is something the formula still does not know.

How often are PRs realistic?

There is no sensible universal frequency for that.

  • Beginners: with linear progression, new weight or rep PRs often arise very frequently, because strength and technique develop quickly.
  • Intermediate: best performances get spread across training blocks. A new rep PR at a submaximal weight is considerably more likely than a new 1RM every week.
  • Very advanced: small improvements can take a long time. Rep PRs, e1RM trends and competition performances then become all the more interesting for tracking the trajectory.

Programs can build such opportunities in deliberately. 5/3/1, for instance, uses an AMRAP set at the end of the main work in its classic scheme. A rep PR can arise from that without a genuine maximum being tested every week.

The direction of the logic matters: a PR is a possible output of progressive overload, not the training method itself.

Anyone who only ever tests how heavy they can lift today accumulates less purposeful training work. Anyone who trains across weeks, by contrast, creates the conditions for a later test to show anything new at all.

Approaching max attempts safely

A 1RM test is not automatically dangerous. A systematic review found high test-retest reliability for standardised 1RM tests across different age and experience groups.

Even so, a max attempt is a different thing from a normal working set. For the squat, bench press or deadlift, a few points make sense:

  1. Work up with specific warm-up sets. The load rises while the rep count falls. It needs no rigid percentage sequence, but no jump from a light warm-up straight to a maximum either.
  2. Use a safety set-up. On bench press and squats, a spotter or correctly set safety pins are part of a sensible set-up.
  3. Make the jumps in weight smaller the closer you get to your maximum. That way you waste fewer attempts and do not overshoot needlessly.
  4. Define your technique standard beforehand. A powerlifting competition PR follows different criteria from a casual gym PR. What matters is that you do not judge the same performance differently every time.
  5. Stop on pain or unexpected loss of control. Slow movement on its own, though, is no fault: a genuine 1RM is allowed to be very slow.

So the question is not whether a max attempt may “grind”. A maximum is by definition maximal.

The better question is: is the attempt technically controlled, sensibly protected, and necessary for your training at all right now?

Track PRs instead of guessing them

A personal record only works when you know what your previous best was.

With 1RM PRs that is easy to remember. With rep PRs it gets confusing fast: was 100 kg × 6 new — or had you already managed seven back in February?

It is in turning individual sessions into a trajectory.

Conclusion

  • PR = personal record; PB is used practically synonymously.
  • A 1RM is only one kind of PR. Rep PRs are frequently especially useful in normal training.
  • An e1RM is an estimate from weight and reps, not a measured maximum.
  • Formulas like Epley are mainly suited to following trends under comparable conditions.
  • There is no fixed calendar for how often you “should” hit a PR. Training creates the conditions; the PR shows the result.
  • 1RM tests can be sensible and reliable, but they should be planned, properly warmed up for and sensibly protected.

So a PR is less a single spectacular moment than a marker in your training history:
