Full Body vs. Split: Which Training Plan Fits You?
“Should I do full body or a split?” The answer depends on a single variable: how many days per week can you train? Everything else follows from that.
This article compares the four most common splits — with concrete recommendations, not “it depends.”
The 4 Most Common Splits
1. Full Body
Every session trains all major muscle groups. 1-2 exercises per muscle group, 2-3 training days per week.
Frequency: 2-3× per muscle group/week Typical time commitment: 45-60 minutes per session
Pros:
- Highest frequency per muscle group with few training days
- Perfect for beginners
- Flexible scheduling (Mon-Wed-Fri, Tue-Thu-Sat, etc.)
- Every training day stimulates muscle growth across your whole body
Cons:
- Limited exercise variation per muscle group (1-2 exercises max)
- Sessions get long at high volume (70+ minutes)
- Less suited for high volume per muscle group (16+ sets)

2. Upper/Lower
Days 1+3: Upper body (chest, back, shoulders, arms). Days 2+4: Lower body (quads, hamstrings, calves, abs).

- Room for 3-4 exercises per muscle group

- Lower body days can be brutal (squats + deadlifts + accessories)

3. Push/Pull/Legs (PPL)
Push: chest, shoulders, triceps. Pull: back, biceps, rear delts. Legs: quads, hamstrings, calves, abs.
Frequency: 1-2× per muscle group/week (depending on variant) Typical time commitment: 50-75 minutes per session
Pros:
- Maximum exercise variation per muscle group
- High volume per session possible without your whole body being wrecked
- No conflict between muscle groups (triceps only fatigued on push day)
Cons:
- 6 training days for 2× frequency — high time commitment
- At only 3 days/week: only 1× frequency (suboptimal)
- High discipline needed to not skip leg day
For: Intermediates to advanced with 5-6 training days/week.
4. Bro Split (1 Muscle Group/Day)
Monday chest, Tuesday back, Wednesday shoulders, Thursday arms, Friday legs. Each muscle group 1× per week.
Frequency: 1× per muscle group/week Typical time commitment: 50-70 minutes per session
Pros:
- Maximum volume per muscle group per session
- Simple planning (Monday = chest, always)
- Popular and well-documented
Cons:
- Only 1× frequency — substantially worse than 2×
- 5-7 days between training stimuli for the same muscle
- Growth stimulus only active 1× per week
For: Generally not recommended. Research on training frequency clearly shows: 2× per week is superior to 1×. If you train 5 days, PPL is the better choice.

Decision Guide: How Many Days Per Week?
The decision is simple:
2 days → Full body. No alternative.
3 days → Full body. Rotating upper/lower is possible but inconsistent.
4 days → Upper/lower. The most efficient 4-day distribution.
5 days → Rotating PPL (Push-Pull-Legs-Push-Pull one week, Legs-Push-Pull-Legs-Push the next) or upper/lower + 1 extra day for weak points.
6 days → PPL-PPL. Every muscle group 2× with maximum volume.
The honest recommendation: Most lifters do best with 4 days upper/lower. It’s the sweet spot of frequency (2×), volume per session (enough for progress), and lifestyle compatibility (2 rest days).
Can I Switch My Split?
Yes — and you should when your circumstances change. Moving from full body to upper/lower after 6-12 months is the natural transition when you need more volume and can fit in a fourth day.
Important: don’t switch your split because you’re bored. Switch it when your current split no longer fits your volume needs or time budget.
