GZCLP: 3 or 4 Days per Week?
GZCLP was published as a three-day plan. The four workouts deliberately do not fit into a calendar week — they roll continuously across Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
A four-day variant can use the same sessions, but it changes more than the calendar: every lift comes around more often, the week contains a third more working sets, and successful weight increases follow each other faster. Four days is therefore not just a tidier arrangement of the original.
The three-day rotation from the original
GZCLP consists of A1, B1, A2 and B2. Every main lift appears once heavy as T1 and once moderate as T2:

After twelve sessions, workouts and weekdays line up the same way again. You do not need an artificial “week five” in the program: B2 is always followed by A1, whatever the calendar says.

What four days change on paper
On four days you complete A1, B1, A2 and B2 within a single week. That changes both frequency and workload:

The four-day variant raises the planned weekly workload by 33 %, because one identical fourth session is added. That figure of 44 is the total of all working sets in the plan, though — not set volume per muscle group. A set of squats and a set of curls are not interchangeable in training terms.
The planned weight increases also arrive more often
In the original, the weight goes up when a lift has met its base volume by its next T1 slot. On three training days the same T1 lift returns every four sessions, so on average after about 9.3 days. On four days it is exactly seven.
That means the planned increases arrive a third more often on the calendar. It is arithmetic, not a guarantee of a third more strength.
An example without false precision:
- Three days: squat T1 on the Monday of week one, then on the Wednesday of week two.
- Four days: squat T1 every Monday.
If both sessions succeed, the four-day variant is allowed to add weight sooner. If the extra workload causes base volume to be missed more often, that arithmetic advantage disappears.
More weekly volume is an option, not an automatic gain
More working sets that you actually recover from can support muscle growth and movement practice. At the same time, the current overview of reviews from the American College of Sports Medicine makes the point that training variables should not be judged in isolation: consistency, progressive loading and a workload you can genuinely repeat count for more than the larger number written on the plan.
Fact: With the sessions unchanged, four days programs a third more sets.
Not derivable from that: That every person will build a third more muscle or strength.
Practical recommendation: Judge the fourth session by whether the quality of your T1 and T2 work holds up across several weeks. If you are only accumulating sets while running through the miss-chains sooner, three days is probably the more productive choice.
Recovery depends on the spacing too
Four training days should not simply be planned as four consecutive full-body days. One workable fixed week is:

This layout is easy to plan, but it contains two pairs of back-to-back days. In A1, heavy squats are followed by moderate bench press; the next day, B1 combines heavy overhead press with moderate deadlifts. That can work, but it is a denser packing than the original Monday–Wednesday–Friday rotation.
An alternative is training roughly every other day. Weeks of three and four sessions then alternate and the rotation keeps rolling evenly. The downside: your training days will not be the same in every calendar week.
Rule of thumb: If T2 deadlifts after a heavy squat day, or T1 bench after overhead press, are what suffers, spread the days further apart or stay on three sessions. What decides it is your performance in the next session, not how symmetrical the calendar looks.
Three days fit better if …
- you are running GZCLP for the first time and do not yet know how you handle the volume;
- there is other sport, physical work or otherwise demanding training in your week;
- four fixed slots will not reliably work for months at a time;
- T1 or T2 are already repeatedly close on three days;
- you are using several extra T3 exercises.
Three days is not a stripped-down variant. It is the published template, and it leaves at least one rest day between full-body sessions.
Four days fit better if …
- four training slots are more realistic long-term than a rotating schedule;
- you already handle the three-day version comfortably;
- the T1 and T2 base volumes are going up with clean technique;
- you deliberately want more practice and a faster run through the planned weight increases;
- you are willing to cut T3 work if the fourth session starts eating into the main work.
The decision is therefore not a verdict on which training frequency is “better”. It answers which weekly workload and which calendar you can actually repeat.
A compact decision aid

“Lean towards” is deliberate here — this is a recommendation. Sleep, training experience, exercise selection and the size of your weight jumps can all shift the answer.
Switching without a reset
The workout order stays A1, B1, A2, B2. That means you can move between three and four days without restarting your weights or scheme chains.
- Three to four: After your last completed session, simply attach the next letter in the rotation.
- Four to three: Do not drop a particular workout type — just continue the rotation on your next available training day.
A deload only makes sense if your current performance or recovery calls for one. A change of calendar is not on its own a reason to reset.
What the hitPR variants change on top
The GZCLP plan in hitPR offers three or four days, each as a full-gym and a free-weights variant. The three-day full-gym version is preselected. It follows Lefever’s continuous rotation, while the four-day versions are hitPR adaptations of the same four workouts.
Every variant contains exactly one T3 per session, for eleven working sets per workout: 33 sets across three days and 44 across four. Moving to four days therefore raises weekly workload through the additional training day alone. If you want to judge how you tolerate the higher frequency, do not add further T3 work at the same time.

Conclusion
Three days is the original and the more robust entry point. Four days turns the same four workouts into a denser week: each lift appears twice instead of an average of 1.5 times, the set count rises by a third, and planned weight increases arrive more often.
The fourth day is only worth it if that extra work does not degrade the quality of the next session. So decide after several weeks of stable performance — not on the basis of which table looks tidier.
