How Long Should You Run GZCLP — and When to Switch?
A missed T1 day does not end GZCLP. It triggers the mechanism the program was built around: 5×3+ becomes 6×2+, then 10×1+. Only when that stage also misses its base volume does a new cycle begin.
Cody Lefever names no fixed end date. So the better question is: is linear progression still producing new performance, or is it just repeating the same standard?
What the original says about ending the program — and what it doesn’t
Fact: After missing the T1 base volume of ten reps in the 10×1+ scheme, you rest two to three days, test a new 5RM, and restart at 5×3+ with 85 % of that result. Lefever expects later runs to get shorter, because you are stronger by then.
Fact: Once recovery is stable and two to three progression cycles are done, he describes the gradual expansion of T3 and later T2. GZCLP can therefore grow into a more individual GZCL program instead of stopping abruptly on a given date.
Not prescribed: The original says neither “switch after six months” nor “stop at your second reset”. Limits like these can serve as practical orientation, but they are not rules from the program’s author.

Which kind of progress you should be comparing
Looking only at your heaviest weight ignores the AMRAP sets. GZCLP can make performance visible in at least two ways:
- Weight PR: You hit the prescribed base volume with more weight than in your last run.
- Rep PR: You get more technically clean reps in the final set at the same weight.
Say your first squat run ends at 100 kg in the 10×1+ scheme. After the 5RM test you start again. A few weeks later you reach 100 kg already in the 6×2+ scheme, and get 14 total reps there instead of the required 12. Even though 102.5 kg was never on the bar, your performance at 100 kg has gone up.
For a fair comparison you need the same exercise, the same scheme and similar execution standards. A rep PR with noticeably less depth or altered technique is not solid evidence of progress.
A scheme change is not yet a plateau
The T1 chain spreads progress across three tasks:

A miss is therefore part of how the plan navigates. Only a comparison across a full cycle answers whether the reset enabled new performance.
The usable exit signal is an unproductive cycle
Practical heuristic: If a correctly executed run after the reset delivers neither a weight PR nor a rep PR, that cycle produced no measurable new performance. If this repeats and the obvious confounders have been ruled out, there is a strong case for a slower progression.
The frequently cited “second reset at the same weight” is only a simplified version of that heuristic. In the original, the starting weight is set by a fresh 5RM, so two cycles will not necessarily land on the same numbers. And a better AMRAP can show progress even when the heaviest working weight stays put.
So the criterion is not:
Saw the same number twice, therefore change program.
It is:
Completed a full fresh run, checked comparable performance, and still found no progress.
First check whether the problem really is the progression
A new program does not fix a cause that lies outside the form of progression. Before switching, it is worth a look at your training log:
Are the rest periods long enough?
Lefever recommends three to five minutes for T1 and two to three minutes for T2. If those regularly turn into noticeably shorter breaks, a later set can fail even though the weight itself is fine.
Have recovery and nutrition changed?
Compare the weeks before the plateau: less sleep, a substantial calorie deficit, extra endurance work or physically demanding labour all change the recovery available to you. This is not an instruction to eat your way out of every stall. It only helps distinguish whether all four lifts are dropping at once or a single progression is exhausted.
Did extra T3 volume arrive shortly before?
The timing is informative. If T1 performance was stable and then repeatedly declines right after two new accessory exercises, take the most recent addition back first. How to expand T3 gradually is covered in the T3 deep dive.
Is only one exercise affected?
Bench press can stall earlier than the deadlift, because the same absolute weight jump is relatively larger. Smaller plates or a smaller jump can extend the linear phase of a single lift. The other lifts do not automatically have to change program too.
Has your technique changed?
When misses repeat, film a working set from a comparable angle. If range of motion or positions visibly differ, that is a technique problem first. Where there is pain or an injury, the decision is not a progression problem and belongs in professional hands.
A decision matrix instead of a fixed end date

Three sensible routes after GZCLP
Individualise the plan within the GZCL method
Lefever describes no hard cut between beginner and intermediate. After two to three cycles with stable recovery, a second T3 can be built up slowly first. Later a second T2 variation can join, such as incline press alongside the overhead press.
This fits if you like the tier structure and the whole system is not stalling — you just need more targeted work.
Move to The Rippler
The Rippler is Lefever’s four-day upper/lower program with wave loading. Instead of only going up on every appearance of the same lift, two ascending weeks are followed by a lighter one. That extends the planning horizon and suits lifters whose progress no longer reliably shows up from session to session.
Pick a cycle-based alternative such as 5/3/1
5/3/1 plans the main lifts across multi-week loading waves and calculates working weights from a conservative Training Max. That makes sense if you want to keep training clearly structured compound lifts but need slower increases and more headroom.
None of these routes is automatically better. The right continuation solves the actual problem: missing exercise variation, weight jumps that are too large, or a progression that no longer fits into the time between two sessions.
Moving into the next plan without a pointless max test
Recommendation: Do not end several T1 chains at once with additional testing days. Use your most recent technically clean sets as your performance standard and follow the entry rule of the new program. For 5/3/1 that means setting a realistic Training Max below your estimated maximum, rather than forcing a 1RM after an exhausting GZCLP cycle.
If only one lift has stopped climbing linearly, only that lift needs a slower progression. A mixed transition takes more organising, but it preserves fast progress where it still exists.
What the hitPR reset says about duration
In the GZCLP plan in hitPR, the end of the T1 chain is followed by a fixed cut of 15 %. That is easier to automate than Lefever’s fresh 5RM test, but it is not identical to the original.
As a result, “twice at exactly the same weight” is easier to spot in hitPR than in the template. Here too the decision should also account for AMRAP performance, technique and outside load. The app can preserve the numbers; whether a cycle took place under comparable conditions remains a training judgement.
Conclusion
GZCLP does not end after a set number of months, and it does not end at your first scheme change. It stays useful as long as the scheme chains keep producing new weight or rep records after a reset.
An unproductive cycle is a warning sign. If that pattern repeats under stable conditions, what you probably need is not more toughness but a progression with a longer time horizon.
